Our Story
Hi! We are Sonira Music Theory.
We're a small company based in Reading in the UK, and we have big musical dreams.

Our plan is to provide music theory online courses and e-learning for musicians, composers and music-enjoyers of all sorts of different abilities and backgrounds. Whoever you are and whatever your musical ambition, we hope that we can help you get there and even further by broadening your understanding and enriching your practice.

Starting with our first courses and practice packs coming throughout 2025, we aim to ultimately offer a range of intuitive, interactive online courses to teach music theory concepts from musical traditions around the world - not just the Western ones!
We'll get you on your instrument or ready to sing so that you too can deepen your experience of music, broaden your understanding and boost your retention of the concepts we'll learn together.
But we don't just want to make amazing new courses. We believe that music is one of the most fundamentally human things there is, a celebration of life and expression. That's why we want to do as much as we reasonably can to help others and make the world a better place as an organisation - of course it's only early days now, but our intention is set for when it comes within reach.

About the founder
Hi there! I'm Chris.
I'm a composer and musician from Oxfordshire, UK.
I love teaching stuff and I love music, and that's why I wanted to start Sonira Music Theory.

Learning music theory growing up, I always felt that the framework it was taught in was too rigid. Too often it felt like I was only learning this for an exam or for a recital.
​
'But it's music!' I thought, 'Music is great!' It just didn't make sense to me to teach such a beautiful art form with such an innate experience to it like it was some kind of textbook.
​
I've always preferred to play by ear, to improvise pieces, to have fun with music, rather than trying to do grades and exams. That's just how I work - and it has certainly caused some frustration at times, not always mine...
​
That's what I want to share with Sonira - the ability to learn music theory not as an exam but as the magic behind music - because it is magic! Want to know why that song brought an actual tear to your eye? Want to know why that number made you get up and dance? The answer is theory: the mechanics of what's going on behind the music - the magic.

So with that said, whether you're continuing your musical journey or just starting out, I really hope you'll join us very soon to learn the magic behind music, and I can't wait to welcome you on your first course with Sonira.
